Indie Shanthi Valley

Traditional coffee agroforests in India are threatened by changes in land use, land fragmentation and farmers moving away from coffee cultivation, which they often consider economically unsustainable. Yet it is these farmers who produce high quality coffee that deserves recognition in premium markets. That's why we've included this coffee in our Discovery Edition, which is not just about its unique taste, but also about supporting coffee producers in different countries around the world.

Indie Shanthi Valley

Shanthi Valley Estate is a farm with over 100 years of tradition, located in the picturesque Mallenahalli area of Chikmagalur. Now in its fourth generation of management, this family-run plantation continues to care for the land and crops with respect for nature and the history of this special place.

The soil here is literally bursting with nutrients - containing above average amounts of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, ensuring optimum plant health. In addition, the farm is a living ecosystem that provides a home to more than 66 species of birds, 40 species of butterflies and 11 species of wild mammals.

In addition to coffee, more than 20 species of fruit and medicinal plants and trees grow here. All this contributes to the biodiversity of the farm, which is located at the foot of the Bababudan Giri mountain at altitudes ranging from 1036 to 1295 metres above sea level.

The main focus of the farm is Arabica coffee, with local varieties including S-795, HDT Catuai, Cauvery and Chandragiri. The coffee is grown under the shade of indigenous trees, hand-picked and retains its freshness and unique flavour thanks to the natural environment. The fruit trees on the farm not only provide shade but also give the coffee its characteristic aroma.

The main source of water is rainwater, which is cleverly diverted to the coffee crops for efficient irrigation. There is also a natural stream running through the farm and a man-made lake that provides plenty of water even in drier periods.

An organic approach is key for Shanthi Valley - half of the fertiliser used is organic and compost is prepared on the farm. This environmentally friendly way of farming protects the local ecosystem and contributes to long-term sustainability.
