Myanmar A Leul Chang
Myanmar A Leul Chang

The Shwe Taung Thu farmer group, which means "Golden Farmer", consists of small-scale farmers Dan and Pa-O who produce specialty coffee in the Ywangan area of southern Shan State, in the eastern part of Myanmar. The group provides its members with guidance, financial support, technical assistance and links them to markets to ensure fair trading conditions for their coffee.

A Lel Chaung community

The coffee, called A Lel Chaung, is named after the village in which it is grown and includes 180 member households. Each community has its own working group that is responsible for managing the processing of coffee in the village. The focus is solely on the production of dry naturals - the climate and terroir are particularly suited to this process, with very dry heat during the harvest season providing excellent conditions for drying.

Why does this coffee belong in our Discovery Edition?

Coffee from Myanmar is exceptional not only for its taste, but also for its history and is not yet commonly available on the shelves of cafes offering fine coffee

The history of coffee cultivation in Myanmar dates back to the late 19th century when coffee was introduced by British colonists. After independence in 1948, there was a subsequent massive expansion of coffee production, especially after the political reforms of 2011, which encouraged the development of agriculture and coffee became a commercial crop.

The production of quality, choice coffee in Myanmar only began in 2015 and the first harvests were brought to Europe in 2017.
